2 women die in forest fire at Dirang

ITANAGAR, Mar 3: In a heartbreaking incident, raging forest fire killed two elderly women, injured one badly and blighted 35 hectares of apple orchard at Dirang in West Kameng district today, according to an official report.

The two women identified as Chogymu and Ngawang Choden died in the incident while one Dorjee Sangyal sustained serious burn injuries and four others with minor injuries. The seriously injured person has been reportedly evacuated to Tezpur for treatment, the report added.

According to source, the fire which started around noon due to alleged negligence of some people engulfed the entire forest area and also burnt down many farming areas and few dwelling houses.

As per report, 5 sqkm of area was consumed by the fire.

Meanwhile, the families of victims have demanded thorough inquiry into the incident and to book the culprits responsible for fire mishap.

In the meantime, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed shock over fire accident that occurred today at Dirang.

The Chief Minister has expressed his heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for giving strength to them to bear the loss.

The CM issued directives to the district administration for immediate relief to be provided to the aggrieved. The district administration has also been directed to assess the losses and provide immediate relief, ex-gratia as per the norms.
