APSLSA conducts disability awareness camp

ITANAGAR, Jun 10: The Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Parents Association and the Arunachal Pradesh Paralympic Association today held a day-long awareness camp for the disabled persons at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Itanagar.

While APSLSA Member Secretary Budi Habung spoke on the role and responsibilities of the Legal Services Authority in providing access to justice with particular reference to the disabled community at large, resource person Nani Mamung, assistant professor from ALA, spoke on the rights on persons with disabilities (PwDs) and called for doing away with differentiations on disability and the penalty as proposed under the said Act.

H Sharma, Principal, Donyi Polo Mission School for the Visual & Hearing Impaired, while speaking on rehabilitation of disabled children, stressed on giving importance to inclusive education under the SSA and RTE. Dr S Yomcha from Tomo Riba State Hospital highlighted the procedures in the certification of disabled persons by the medical board.

While Anuj Shrivastav, special educator, Himalayan University Itanagar, spoke on the issue regarding self advocacy of children with special needs, Osunam Pertin, clinical psychologist, in her presentation highlighted the issues and challenges for persons with disabilities and stress management for the parents.

During the programme, the APSLSA member secretary also requested the parents’ association to approach the Legal Services Authority on occasion where it finds that the rights of the disabled persons are violated by the govt and the department concerned. Pura Aya, special educator, Dept of Social Justice, in his presentation highlighted the various govt schemes for the disabled persons. During the programme, videos on various interventions of NALSA were also screened, and doubts of parents were cleared by the resource persons.
