Water of Siang River has become unfit for human consumption: Report

PASIGHAT, Dec 6: Adding on to the worries of many a warriors including Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering and Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who are fighting for the cause of all-potent Siang river, come an official report that says that water of river Siang has become unfit for human consumption.

According to the report of the State Water Quality Testing Laboratory (SWQTL), the water of river Siang has become unfit for human consumption while reasoning that Turbidity/NTU at 482 and Iron (Fe), mg/l at 1.65 which are found to be beyond permissible limit.

SWQTL, O/o Chief Engineer (Sanitation) PHE & WS Department, Itanagar has submitted the water testing report of Siang river, based on the water sample collected and sent on Nov 29 last by the EE (WRD), Pasighat Tamo Jamoh.

Experts say that at normal level iron is not deadly to any aquatic animals; but unusually high amount of iron existing in water may lead to adverse changes in colour, odour and taste of water and has negative effects on aquatic population, behavior and health.

It may be recounted her that MP Ering had earlier drawn the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on ‘Siang issue’, pleading him to take up with the Chinese government the unusual receding of Siang river at Pasighat and a sudden change in its water quality.

Ering apprehended that the change in water quality, which is unusual during the winter season, could be due to a possible diversion of the river in Tibet.
