PASIGHAT, Jan 5: Around 500 hectares of winter crops like mustard, matikolai etc were damaged by a strong hailstorm at Namsing village under Mebo sub-division of East Siang district on Wednesday night, thereby affecting more than 200 families.

As per Gaon Burah of the village, Bohonto Perme, the hailstorm was so strong that entire standing crops were damaged by the hails which destroyed the hopes of around 220 farm families who had expected good harvest. “Most of the farmers have taken loan from bank under KCC scheme and such damage has put the farmers in worries as to how they would repay the loan,” added Perme.

Meanwhile, representative from Agriculture Department, VLW from Mebo has inspected the damaged crop fields today and taken note of the entire crop damages. The farming communities of the village have strongly appealed the State Government to compensate the loss as many of the farmers have loan from the bank.
