Guv prescribes multi-pronged strategy to tackle drug menace

TEZU, Feb 8: State Governor Brig (Retd) Dr B D Mishra while expressing his deep concern over poppy (opium) cultivation and drug trafficking & addiction which is destroying the whole society, today suggested multi-pronged strategy to tackle this social menace, including destroying opium plants, action against people involved drug trafficking, providing alternate livelihood to poppy growers.

Addressing a public meeting at this district HQs town, the Governor emphatically said that there must be social intensity and every member of the society must involve in the eradication of drug menace. He called upon the Gaon Burahs, Panchayat members and public leaders to cooperate with the District Administration, Police and Central Bureau of Narcotics to control and destruct opium plantations.

While stating that the Central Govt under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi was giving top priority for development of North East, the Governor pointed that lots of projects and programmes with required funding are being implemented in the region. To ensure that these welfare schemes are implemented properly, he said, people’s participation is a must. They must see that there is transparency, accountability, continuity, audit and review and mid course correction in the process of implementation.

During his meeting with district heads of department (HoDs), the Governor advised them to involve the common people in the implementation process so that there is absolute transparency and accountability. Stating that Govt officials are the pillar of the society, he emphasized that they must work with probity and rectitude, and advised them to ensure that benefits of welfare schemes reach even to the last man in the last rung of the society. Lohit Deputy Commissioner Karma Leki briefed him about the various developmental projects in the district.

Earlier immediately after reaching Tezu, the Governor visited the Indira Gandhi Govt College, Tezu and interacted with faculty and students. He exhorted the girl students to prepare themselves so as to shoulder equal responsibilities as their male counterpart.

The Governor also advised the faculty members to recognize the merit of the students, impart latest knowledge in their subjects and treat their students as an extended family.

The Governor accompanied by his better half also visited the Zonal General Hospital at Tezu, and distributed fruits to the indoor patients. They also interacted with the inmates of the drug de-addiction centre.

Earlier, on their arrival, the Governor was accorded a traditional reception by the locals including Minister of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, Dairy Development, Research and Art & Culture Dr Mohesh Chai, Arunachal Pradesh Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Ltd (APMDTCL) Chairperson Dasanglu Pul, DC Karma Leki, Sr Superintendent of Police Isaac Pertin, Gaon Burahs, PRI members, cultural troupes and school children.
