Bid to thwart opium cultivation in Lohit

TEZU, Feb 12: In a bid to thwart opium cultivation in Lohit district, Deputy Commissioner Karma Leki convened a coordination meeting at the DC’s conference hall here today.

The meeting was attended by SP Lohit Isaac Pertin, nodal officer Narcotics Cell Oli Koyu, representatives of Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), Cultural and Literary Society of Mishmis (CALSOM), All Mishmi Women Welfare Society (AMWWS), All Mishmi Students’ Union (AMSU), senior BJP leader Sotai Kri and administrative officers.

It was concurred at the meeting that opium cultivation was a menace to society and must be discouraged at any cost. Representatives of CALSOM, AMWWS and AMSU strongly supported the initiatives taken by the district administration and said offenders must be booked under NDPS Act.

Sotai Kri opined that there arose no question of alternative livelihood as the public already knew opium cultivation was illegal. He said destruction of few growers’ livelihood was nothing in comparison to the society’s overall wellbeing.

Kri lamented that if not stopped in time, opium intake would spread all over Arunachal Pradesh. He also exhorted the NGOs present, especially student groups to wholeheartedly support the anti-opium movement.

He stressed that without local support, destruction and awareness activities will be harder.

AMWWS general secretary Shibali Yun shared that the women’s group had been constantly involved in spreading awareness against opium cultivation. Yun informed that they regularly carried out destruction operations and requested the CBN team to continue operation throughout the year and not just in particular months.

AMSU president Legem Takaliang said that the students group will give their full support. He requested the DC to take strict action against such offenders and said that most people grew opium only for easy money.

He strongly called for continued eviction drives and destruction activities.

The DC said that due to opium usage the future generation was getting destroyed while assuring that full cooperation will be provided by the district administration for logistics support.

He informed that executive orders were regularly issued. Any deliberate transgression of the order will be severely dealt with, he said, according to an official release.
