Sensitization program on human rights held

ITANAGAR, Mar 9: A one-day workshop cum sensitization programme on human rights was conducted at ATI, Naharlagun today with the sole objective of promoting the human rights literacy and awareness among the various sections of society in accordance with section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

Altogether, 37 participants including 16 panel advocates of Itanagar Permanent Bench of Gauhati High Court and 21 Arunachal Pradesh Police officers from different districts attended the programme, conducted under the sponsorship of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi.

Addressing the participating officers, ATI Director Pate Marik said that police personnel and lawyers are the watchdog of the society in whose custody the security and justice of common citizens are relied upon.

The protection of citizens’ rights and security should be carried out on a missionary zeal by the law enforcing agencies, he stressed. Violation of human rights specially in our tribal society, nowadays, has become rampant due to infusion of diverse cultural and different social dimensions. Therefore, police personnel should prepare themselves in every moment to protect their rights and security, he emphasized.

Papum Pare district SP Tumme Amo and Sr Advocate Sunil Mow were the resource persons of the programme. Bamin Tarang, Assistant Director-cum-Course Coordinator & Nani Khambo, Assistant Director also spoke.
