Tirap destroys 36 acres of poppy cultivation

KHONSA, Mar 9: Tirap District Administration in association with Tirap Police, Assam Rifles of Lazu unit and Nocte Women Society destroyed 36 acres of poppy cultivation in Lazu areas including Longliang, Raho, Sinnu, Lazu, Noglo, Lower Chinhan, Upper Chinhan and Horu Chinhan.

While leading the opium (kani) destruction drive, DC P N Thungon interacted with the public of Lazu and informed that destruction drive shall be carried out till March 12 next for which he asked the civil society of Lazu area villages to cooperate with the team.

The DC assured to initiate the matter to state govt for rehabilitation to replace the existing poppy cultivation in the district.

Khonsa DHO Henrik Basar, who accompanied the destruction team, while interacting with the poppy cultivators urged them to adopt alternative cultivation with the help of Horticulture department like large ginger, large chilly and large cardamom.

The DC appreciated NWS president Litcha Socia, secretary Nilom Wangsu and members – Chasum Lowang, Wiwan Ramra, Kutung Aboh and Chanam Wangsa for their wholehearted participation in the massive opium destruction drive.

The DC also appealed all NGOs, religious leaders, Chiefs, GBs and PRIs of Lazu area to come forward and join the opium destruction drive. (DIPRO)
