Effort to prevent forest fire, conserve water catchment area (p)

ITANAGAR, Apr 2: The State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Department of Environment & Forests in association with Chinnyia Donnyia Welfare Society and Gram Panchayat, Batt village organized a one day training and awareness programme on prevention of forest fire and water catchment area conservation in and around capital Complex (Itanagar) at Batt village today.

The programme, supported by Dept of Environment and Forests under State CAMPA, was attended by senior forest officers, gram panchayat members, gaon burahs and village elders.

Dusu Shra, Chief Conservator of Forest & Director SFRI informed about the ill-effects of forest fire, which is destructive to all types of vegetation growth including trees, shrubs, wildlife and microorganisms in the area and appealed the villagers not to set fire by any means.

He requested them to prevent fire occurrence, protect wildlife, soil and water pollution.

Scientist R K Taj elaborated on impact of forest fire, jhumming and earth works on soil, water and air. He informed that, the cause of drinking water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, stream and river pollution in and around capital complex is due to forest fire, deforestation, earth cuttings and expansion of human settlement.

Taj appealed panchayat leaders, GBs, youth and common public to conserve water catchment areas of respective places, make the streams and rivers of capital complex litter free.

Kara Topu, GPM, Techi Lalin, Youth leaders of the Batt and Bedhi Bedha area and many senior members of the village also spoke.
