Mopin festival gets underway

ITANAGAR, Apr 4: Mopin, the harvest and most popular festival of the Galo community, has got underway at Mopin-Solung ground, Itanagar from Monday evening with the inauguration of cultural and folklore competitions among 17 Popir parties.

All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union president Hawa Bagang and Itanagar Buddhist Cultural Society president Sonam Tenzing attended the inaugural programme as chief guest and guest of honour respectively and declared the cultural extravaganza open amidst a huge crowd.

Speaking on the occasion, AAPSU president said that the festivals foster love, harmony, brotherhood and peace. He called upon the community members to preserve the rich traditional and cultural heritage of the Galos.

The week-long celebrations which will go on till April 8 next are being organized by the Mopin Festival Celebration Committee Itanagar under the aegis of Mopin Preservation Society.

Earlier, from March 17 to 21, games and sports competitions were also organized as part of the celebrations wherein IMC chief councillor Kipa Kaku and ANSU leader Asam Gyadi attended as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
