Familiarization exercise on disaster management under way in EK

Seppa, May 12: With the objective to educate people about disaster preparedness and strengthen disaster response at the grassroots level, East Kameng District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in collaboration with 12th Battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Itanagar has launched a two-week-long series of familiarization exercise on disaster management in the district starting with the one at District Hospital here on May 7 last.

During the day-long programme organized at Kameng Presidium School here today, the team of NDRF personnel led by Inspectors Bhaskar Kumar and Manish Kumar Chaudhary and Sub-Inspector Ram Singh Sahni briefly demonstrated basic steps and techniques of rescue during disasters and also highlighted the use of improvised tools/methods from locally available resources.

The NDRF men also explained about the precautions to be taken during disasters. The team also gave a live demonstration of rescue operation, and way of operating rescue equipments, administering first aid to injured persons and other related acts of rescue to the audience.

Moreover, the NDRF team explained the people about disaster preparedness and safety tips to reduce the extent of damages. They also demonstrated various techniques to rescue people caught during disasters like fire, earthquake and other natural calamities.

Speaking on safety rules, precautions and response during natural or man-made disasters, Inspector Kumar said disasters may occur anywhere anytime. He urged the people to learn the modern techniques to stay safe during disaster.

Stating that the Himalayan region including Arunachal Pradesh is very prone to earthquake, he said the common people of the region should be kept alert in this regard. He informed that there are many improved techniques which can be applied during disaster to save lives and properties. He also explained many techniques and methods of rescue operation and elaborated on how a disaster victim can be evacuated to safe zone.

AMDO Keshok Dodum assisted the team in sensitizing the masses in local dialect. While interacting with the NDRF team, East Kameng DC Gaurav Singh Rajawat briefed them about the status of flood and other natural calamities occurred in the district so far. As ours is a Himalayan state, we cannot rule out the possibility of disasters like earthquake and so, we need to be prepared, he added.

The DC said that impact of any calamity could be reduced to a large extent if people are made aware of general disaster preparedness and safety tips. People should be aware of the disaster management techniques so that they could respond properly during natural calamities, he added.

Besides the DC, AMDO and NDRF personnel, the programme was also attended by EACs Atin Padung and Pama Bagang, DySP Ringu Ngupok, DDMO Langbia Aka, ADI Nondo Doka, AE (WRD) Kholie Tadap, other Govt officials and staff of Disaster Management Dept, police personnel, students and general public.

Besides District Hospital, Seppa, similar kinds of familiarization programme were also conducted at GSS New Seppa, GMS Pacha and GHSS, Bazarline, Seppa. (DIPRO)
