World Environment Day celebrated

ZIRO, Jun 6: The 43rd World Environment Day was celebrated across the Ziro plateau on June 5. At Hong and Hija villages inter school skit competitions for school children on the theme of WED ‘Beat plastic pollution’ were held. Children from seven schools participated.

Addressing the villagers, DFO Koj Rinya talked about the ill effects of plastic on human health and environment and exhorted the villagers to stop using disposable plastic cups and plates in community functions, in order to reduce the plastic menace.

On the occasion, a cleanliness drive was also carried out at Pange followed by declaration of Tale Wildlife Sanctuary as Plastic litter free area. The program was organised by Hapoli Forest Division in collaboration with Biodiversity Management Committees and youth organisations.

At Kudung Burung, the PHE and WS department carried out a massive cleanliness drive to mark the WED wherein about 1400 kg plastic waste was collected, segregated and disposed off.

PANGIN: World Environment Day was also observed at Pangin in Siang district jointly by PHED and District Administration. The programme was attended by ADC T Talom, SP Irak Bagra and HoDs from various departments, among others.

EE, PHE and WS Division, Pangin, Subat Pertin while enlightening the gathering about ill effects of plastic on human health and environment appealed them to inculcate eco friendly habits like substituting plastics with natural and bio degradable products like use of local ekkam patta instead of disposable plastic products, bamboo mugs instead of disposable glasses or carrying own shopping bags while visiting market rather than relying on plastic bags.

A short video and power-point presentation on plastic pollution were also shown which was followed by a cleanliness drive. A plantation drive was also carried out in and around the township area with the saplings provided by Forest Department.

ROING: The World Environment Day was also celebrated with great fervor at Roing. Reinforcing its commitment to clean & green initiatives, AMYAA NGO, RCE East Arunachal and I-Clean Roing jointly organized a plantation drive in Mayu II Colony to make their area green. The plantation drive was followed by a cleanliness drive in Mayu ground that aimed at creating awareness among public regarding the ill effects of plastic on environment.

Drawing competition for different categories of school and college students on the themes “Green Earth, Beautiful Earth” and “Clean Environment is Life and Pollution is Death” was also held as a part of the WED celebration. Besides, a friendly cricket match was also played between I-Clean Roing and Roing Cricket Club.
