Sensitization meet cum orientation training on NTCP held at Jang

TAWANG, Jun 17: The District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Tawang today organized a sensitization meeting cum orientation training on National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) at Jang Town Govt Middle School for police personnel, local NGOs, members of Jang Market Welfare Committee and the shopkeepers.

District Consultant (DTCC) Sang Dorjee Dirkhipa sensitized the participants about NTCP and COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products) Act, 2003, and its implementation in the district with a PowerPoint presentation. Moreover, how they (stakeholders) can play a vital role in effective implementation of tobacco control laws and tobacco control measures and at the same time, generating mass awareness about ill-effects of tobacco use to individuals in particular and society as a whole were explained in detail by NTCP consultant.

Furthermore, detailed explanation on Section 4 of COTPA Act was done because this particular section prohibits smoking in all public places and its effective implementation can save millions from exposure to second hand smoke. Exposure to second hand smoke also causes illness and death in millions across the globe.

DPO (NTCP) Dr Sangey Thinley explained the participants about Section 6 of COTPA Act which protects youths from tobacco menace. He also spoke about ill effects of tobacco consumption including how it causes fatal diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease etc and at same time how it also harms our economy and environment.

Leiki Droma (SWM) informed the participants about the TCC (Tobacco Cessation Centre) at District Hospital and availability of quantum resonance human nicotine testing instrument. Droma also briefed about help that one can get from TCC in quitting tobacco use.

Earlier, the meeting started with the welcome address by Tsering Dolkar (DPC, NCD Tawang).
