WASE-VDP Leku join hands to tackle drug menace


PASIGHAT, Jul 7: A seven-member team from Women Against Social Evils (WASE), East Siang met Village Defence Party (VDP) members of Leku, Jonai in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Saturday to devise strategies to tackle the menace of drug and other illicit substance abuse prevailing in both districts.

Informing about the meeting held at Leku village, WASE general secretary Joya Tasung Moyong told that several inter-state drug peddlers and mafias are moving in and out to East Siang district from Leku and Jonai areas. She also informed that youths from Pasighat and other areas of East Siang district are intruding into Leku and some of them have been arrested recently by Assam police. “We are worried over the rapid growth of drug addiction among the youths despite our effort to tackle the menace. Even youths, both boys and girls, from well-to-do families are also found involved in the illegalities.

WASE member met Vimol Mili, VDP president Dalim Payeng, VDP adviser and OC (acting), Jonai PS Hazarika discussed at length to tackle the menace jointly. The VDP informed the WASE members youths from outside are restricted to enter the village or pass through it, as many drug peddlers take the road from Leku to escape from getting caught at Ruksin check gate by APP.
