6th standard student drowns in Siang river

PASIGHAT, Jul 9: In an unfortunate incident, an 11-year-old boy, identified as Geyon Siram, son of Bakin Siram from Sisen village under Siang district drowned in the Siang river this evening around 5.15 pm while washing a dog at Komlighat side.

According to eye witnesses, the victim along with his elder brother was cleaning their dog in the Siang river. Elder brother was also almost drowned but was saved by one Toram Tarang of Jarkong village. However, the class VI student Geyon couldn’t be saved.

“We were strolling around the river bank when we saw them drowning. So immediately I put down my phone and jumped into the river and could pull out the elder brother, but could not trace the younger one,” said Tarang, who presently pursuing BSc (Agri) from Dehradun had returned hometown just few days ago.

Another braveheart Robin Siram, a class VIII student of Govt Gandhi Sec School, who also helped in rescuing the victim’s elder brother, said that somehow they could saved the boy, but by the time another boy was to be rescued who disappeared more side the river.

Till filing of this report, there was no trace of the victim even though a rescue operation was launched which continued till 7 pm. Rubber boat of Fire Brigade was also pressed into service which was also monitored by East Siang SP Prashant Gautam and Pasighat PS OC Atan Taki along with Obang Apum, an official from District Disaster Management Authority.

The search operation will resume tomorrow early morning. In view of today’s tragic incident, the District Administration has advised the general public to venturing into the swelled Siang river.
