180 butterfly species documented during 5th Northeast Butterfly Meet at Pakke

ITANAGAR, Oct 1: Around 180 species of butterflies including Nonsuch Palmer Creteus Cyrina, Hewitson’s Dull Oakblue Arhopala oenea, Wavy Maplet Chersonesia intermedia, etc were recorded during the three-day 5th Northeast Butterfly Meet-2018 held in Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve under East Kameng district that concluded on Monday.

Around 50 butterfly enthusiasts from different parts of the country including hosts Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Tamil Nandu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh participated in the Meet, organized in collaboration with Pakke WLS & Tiger Reserve, Dept of Environment & Forests, BNHS, Aaranyak, Numaligarh Refinery Limited, BAMOS, NgunuZiro, WIKI Butterfly Lovers and Flutters Website.

Welcoming the participants, ADC Seijosa T R Tapu said, “Pakke is an important biological hotspot and butterflies play a key role in maintaining the biological richness in the region.” He emphasized on the necessity of establishing butterfly gardens in schools, offices and local premises of households to keep oneself connected to the nature and environment.

Divisional Forest Officer, Pakke WLS & Tiger Reserve Tana Tapi informed that several recreational activities were organized for the participants including discussion sessions about the habitats and activities of various butterfly species found in the region. Tapi said that these activities will draw the attention of researchers and tourists towards Pakke Tiger Reserve as an important butterfly destination.

Activities of the meet included butterfly watching and photography in field, and indoor workshops on butterfly ecology, taxonomy etc. The Butterfly Meet provided a common platform for butterfly enthusiasts, wildlife researchers and staff of Forest Dept to interact and exchange ideas on butterfly diversity, distribution and conservation and to explore rich butterfly diversity of the region.

It was also decided that the 6th edition of Northeast Butterfly Meet will also be held in Arunachal Pradesh at Namdapha National Park in Changlang district in 2019, the DFO informed.

Northeast Butterfly Meet (NEBM) is an annual event organized by Butterflies of Northeast India Group since 2013. The meet focuses on encouraging young students and enthusiasts to take up butterfly research and conservation work in the North Eastern region. The 1st edition was held in Kaziranga, Assam, 2nd edition in Manas National Park, Assam, 3rd at Garo Hills, Meghalaya and 4th edition in Sikkim.
