Maiden women’s volleyball tourney underway at Yingkiong

YINGKIONG, Oct 5: First ever Women Volleyball Tournament of Upper Siang district has got underway at the Yingkiong general ground on Saturday last with the local legislator cum Minister of Health & Family Welfare, RD and PR Alo Libang inaugurating the event in presence of a large number of sport enthusiasts. The tournament, organized by Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society, will continue till Oct 7. As many as 15 women teams from different age groups are participating in the tournament.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister commended the NGO for giving the women a platform to showcase their sporting talent. While citing the popular adage “health is wealth”, he said it will also help the participants maintain their health. He also informed that the Govts – both at the Centre and the State are giving priority for emancipation of women and girl child.

Upper Siang Deputy Commissioner Duly Kamduk also praised the Society for conducting the first ever women volleyball tournament in the district. He advised the players to play the game with the spirit of sportsmanship.

Earlier, the general secretary of Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society Dr Mity Jopir in her speech informed that the main motive behind conducting the tournament was to help the women and girls to come out of inhibition and to make them confident to face today’s challenging world.

In the inaugural match, Upper Siang Women-IX defeated Neli Nengo-A team. Besides the Olympic march, band display by VKV girls, and a spectacular mega dance performed by 120 girls were the major highlights of the opening ceremony. (DIPRO)
