‘Choose life, not tobacco’

ITANAGAR, Oct 10: The State Tobacco Control Cell under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) in collaboration with the Voluntary Health Association of Arunachal Pradesh is organizing anti-tobacco awareness campaign through Rock show in 13 NTCP-implemented districts of Arunachal Pradesh to intensify the fight against the menace of tobacco in the State.

State Programme Officer (NTCP) Dr Biman Natung informed that the campaign themed ‘Choose life, not tobacco’ will focus on the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2), 2016-17 released by the Health Ministry, according to which 38.7% of men, 5.4% of women and 22.7% of all adults currently smoke tobacco. 50.1% of men, 27.7% of women and 39.3% of all adults use smokeless tobacco and 61.1% of men, 28.7% of women and 45.5% of all adults either smoke tobacco or use smokeless tobacco. With Khaini and Gutka being the most commonly used tobacco products, 22.9% of the adults use Khaini and 18.9% Gutka.

The prevalence of tobacco use among persons aged between 15-17 years has increased from 12.3% in GATS-1 to 25.1% in GATS-2. 19.7% of all adults who worked indoors were exposed to second hand smoke (SHS) at their workplace. 21.7% of all adults were exposed to SHS) at any public place.

To reduce the use of tobacco among the youth and to protect the non-smokers from tobacco smoke, Govt of India has enacted a comprehensive legislation, Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Regulation Act (COTPA), 2003.

Dr Natung added, as part of our commitment in generating awareness among the masses one of the most popular Rock bands of the State “The Royal Flush”, the brand ambassador of anti-tobacco campaign will be performing at Ziro, Daporijo, Aalo, Yingkiong, Roing, Pasighat, Tezu, Changlang, Khonsa, Seppa, Bomdila, Tawang and Papumpare from October 12 next.
