Joy of Reading Festival gets underway

ROING, Dec 5: Joy of Reading Festival themed ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ got underway at the auditorium of VKV, Roing today with Namsai Deputy Commissioner Dr Tapasya Raghav inaugurating the four-day fest.

The launch of the event was made in presence of Lower Dibang Valley DC Mitali Namchoom, Gitesh Sinha (Marketing Manager, TERI), Er K Madhavan Kutty (Malayalam author), Er Sumi Migri (Manager, Ashok Leyland, Ghy), HoDs and students of the area.

The Festival is being organised by the Lohit Youth Libraries Network and supported by the District Administration and the Women & Child Development Department.

Addressing the students, Dr Tapasya Raghav said that organizing the festival on the theme ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ is a noble idea and if work is done in the right spirit, many positive changes can occur. Any social change has to come from schools and it is only when students know about social evils and question it, can change take place, she added.

A well-read kid grows up to become a thoughtful person, she stated while encouraging the students to take up reading from a young age. It is through reading stories that one can learn values and morals and become a better person, Dr Raghava said.

DC Namchoom encouraged all to inculcate the habit of reading in daily life, which in turn, will enhance one’s knowledge and personality. We are so busy with our lives in the digital world that we have forgotten the joy and beauty of reading, she said while encouraging all to take full advantage of the Festival.

Sathyanarayana Mundayoor, Coordinator, Lohit Youth Library Network spoke about it being the third year of the Joy of Reading Festival and informed the gathering about the origin of the Youth Library Network and its inception in 1998 at Italin. He added that the library network was flourishing and spread to many districts as the library volunteers were using innovative methods to teach and spread the joy of reading.

Gitesh Sinha of TERI appreciated the effort that was put to encourage reading and informed about the children’s books on environment published by TERI.

The Joy of Reading Festival will continue till 8th December with a mobile bus displaying and selling books to students at Koronu, Bolung and Dambuk. (DIPRO)
