Podi-Barbi celebrated with traditional gaiety

ITANAGAR, Dec 5: Podi-Barbi, the annual harvest festival of the Adi community, was today celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety at Mopin-Solung Ground here.

Mainly celebrated by the Adis of Mechuka, Monigong and Tato in newly created Shi-Yomi district, the Podi-Barbi is an occasion to extend gratitude to deities and Mother Nature for prosperous and surplus production of crops.

Organized by Podi-Barbi Celebration Committee, Itanagar-2018, today’s celebration had the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of people, comprising of young and old alike wearing traditional attires in the day-long festival.

Attending the festival celebration as chief guest, State BJP vice president Tame Phassang extended Podi Barbi greetings to the Adi communities and the people of State as a whole. He also lauded the community for its rich culture and tradition. “One cannot find the zest of our rich culture and tradition in Google or any other sources but it has to be inherited from our ancestors,” stated Phassang.

“I have spent my college days in Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat and since then I have a close association with Adi communities and what more attracted to me is their practice to preserve their language. Young or old, everyone greets and speak each other with their language which helps them to preserve their language,” the BJP leader said while appealing other communities to follow such practice.

While asking the people to be united for a strong and developed society, Phassang added the Adi community is one of the most intellectual societies in the state and they could lead us in positive way. Moreover, my doors are always open for everyone irrespective of caste & creed, I will extend my all out support for every positive endeavor, he added.

The special guest, Getom Borang, Superintending Engineer of Rural Works Department also called for the preservation of culture and traditions. He appealed the youths of the community to uphold their traditions, while moving simultaneously with modernity.

While elaborating on the mythology of Podi-Barbi festival, Borang also urged the gathering to maintain the sanctity of every festival.

Acknowledging the Adi community as one of the intellectual and developed communities of the state, Mechuka MLA PD Sona, who was the special invitee on the occasion, appealed the community leaders to be torchbearer for the others.

Beside colorful cultural programmes, Ponung, Momen and community feast were the other attractions of the day-long festival.
