NAHARLAGUN, Jun 17: In a gruesome incident, a man in his late 50’s was found lying in a pool of blood at a house in Barapani area here on Tuesday night. He was allegedly murdered by one Koj Sambiyo, who was later arrested by the police.

The deceased has been identified as one Debraj Singh alias Salamuddin, a converted Muslim, who was employed with Spectrum Coaching Institute, G-Extension here and settled at Laluk in Assam.

Naharlagun SDPO Dekio Gumja informed that the accused Koj Sambiyo was arrested from the nearby jungle where he was hiding after committing the crime. He has confessed to killing the victim with a sharp-edged weapon.

A case (No.97/21) has been registered at Naharlagun PS under Section 302 of IPC and further investigation is on, the SDPO said. Both the deceased and the accused were employees of the coaching institute and were close friends.

“Weapon of offence has been recovered and it is a dao, approximately 44cm length with blood marks on it. There were two cut marks on the body - one on the neck which probably was the reason for death and the other on the stomach. The intestines which were lying on the floor were tied up with a thread. It seems that after killing the person the accused wanted to dispose off the body by chopping it into pieces but in the mid-way was overwhelmed and had left the thought,” the SDPO said.

The motive of the murder is yet to be ascertained as the accused hasn’t been cooperating, the SDPO said, while informing that the accused had called the victim for drink and later attacked him with a dao which led to his death.

“Neither there was any enmity between the two nor the neighbours heard them arguing with each other after getting drunk. It seems that there might be a romantic angle involved in the murder which is being investigated,” he added.
