Plantation drive conducted under Green initiative

PASIGHAT, Jun 23: To commemorate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a plantation drive was organized by the Siang Brigade of Indian Army under the Green Envelope Initiative in the premises of Rayang Military Station, Pasighat on Thursday. More than 5000 ornamental, shady and fruit-bearing trees were planted as part of the Green initiative.

Taking part in the programme, East Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu planted a sapling (Pongamia Pinnata) and urged everyone to plant more trees for greenery, protection of the environment and to combat climate change. The DC also lauded the efforts put in by the Armed Forces in rebuilding the forest area.

The Commander of Siang Brigade said the plantation drive by adopting the Miyawaki method for micro forest in the area is bound to enhance forest cover and help rebuild a brighter tomorrow for the future generations.

DFO Tashi Mize informed that under the pre-Van Mahotsav celebration, 10,000 saplings have so far been distributed from the office of the Divisional Forest Office (Territory), Pasighat. It may be mentioned that the Green Envelope Initiative includes phase-wise plantation of trees over a period of time to enhance green cover in the area.

It involves plantation of large number of native trees in a smaller area, which becomes a self-sustaining ecosystem within a shorter period of time, based on micro-forest being developed by plantation based on Miyawaki technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The initiative is also an example of civil-military liaison for overall development of the society & the nation as a whole. (DIPRO)
