28 Tripura teachers summon for doing private tuition

Agartala, Jun 6: The South District Education officer of Tripura has served notice to 28 teachers and directed them to appear before the committee for an inquiry after the official has received complaint against them engaging in private tuition violating government order.

Officials said at least six teachers in Sabroom and 22 of Belonia have been ordered to appear before the respective sub-division level committees on Wednesday

In a separate order, the district education officer of South district said as per instruction of High Court of Tripura, private tuition by school teachers of the government and government aided schools is prohibited in Tripura.

“Based on the representations from unemployed youths, department instructed to hold an enquiry and to take appropriate actions against teachers found engaging them-selves in private tuition.” the order read.

A section of government teachers for long time doing private tuition against payment unethically, which becomes a practice in Tripura even for the junior level classes.

As a result, such teachers have not interested in classes in the school but government paid him well for doing the best in the institution. Pupil lost interest in attending school instead preferred to bunk the classes and go for private tuition with hefty payment.

Most of the cases, despite merit economically weak students are deprived from the learning opportunity in the schools, said Director Secondary Education N C Sharma.

In 2015, the then chief justice of Tripura high court Deepak Kumar Gupta had directed the state government on banning private tuition by government teachers but it was never really implemented. (UNI)
