Tirap DC launches ‘Unexplored Tirap’ showcasing region’s biodiversity

Khonsa, May 27: Tirap Deputy Commissioner Techu Aran has officially launched the book “Unexplored Tirap – A Bio-Cultural Portrait” in a ceremony held at the PWD Circuit House here.

Authored by Chajo Lowang and Sarah Khongsai, the book showcases the region’s rich ecological and cultural landscape through compelling narratives and photography.

In his address, DC Aran commended the authors for their dedication in documenting Tirap’s unique biodiversity. Emphasizing the vital role of insects, birds, and animals in maintaining ecological balance, he said, “Our survival is intricately linked with the survival of wildlife. Every species, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in sustaining the ecosystem.”

The DC also urged the community to discard unsustainable practices such as rampant hunting and harmful fishing methods involving chemicals, electricity, or explosives. He called upon the Divisional Forest Officers of Khonsa and Deomali to intensify awareness campaigns and encourage community participation in conservation efforts. He further stressed the importance of preserving fish during breeding seasons to support biodiversity and ensure long-term food security.

Speaking on the occasion, DDSE K C Lowangcha praised the perseverance and passion of the young authors, recounting the challenges they faced during their fieldwork, including trekking through remote terrain and spending nights in forests. “This book is not just a record; it’s a call to protect and cherish the natural world around us,” she said.

Nikita Buragohain, speaking on behalf of Green Hub, shared insights into the ongoing collaboration with the authors since 2022. She emphasized the organization’s mission to empower youth through conservation storytelling, photography, and community engagement. She lauded the book for shedding light on lesser-known species and landscapes in Tirap.

In her keynote address, Chajo Lowang expressed gratitude to the district administration, particularly former DC Taro Mize and current DC Techu Aran, for their support. She reflected on the emotional and physical challenges faced during the research and credited Green Hub Tezpur for the training that played a key role in completing the project.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sarah Khongsai, acknowledging all contributors and supporters of the project.

“Unexplored Tirap” stands as a celebration of the region’s natural and cultural wealth and serves as a powerful call to action for environmental conservation and sustainable coexistence with nature.
