Tawang to host first-ever International Conference on 6th Dalai Lama: Khandu

Itanagar, Nov 4: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday announced that Arunachal Pradesh is poised to “create history and be a part of it” by hosting the first-ever International Conference on His Holiness the Sixth Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso, this December at Tawang.

The Sixth Dalai Lama, revered as a spiritual luminary and poetic genius, was born in Urgyeling, Tawang, and remains an iconic figure in Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist history. His verses and philosophy continue to inspire generations with their spiritual depth and lyrical beauty.

Addressing the upcoming event, Khandu, currently on an official tour to his hometown, Tawang, said in a social media post: “The world knows little about His Holiness the Sixth Dalai Lama, who was born here in Tawang — a spiritual figure of immense depth whose poetic brilliance continues to enchant generations. It is now our duty to let the world know about his life, his philosophy, and his timeless words.”

The International Conference is being organized under the guidance of His Eminence Ven Tengyur Rinpoche and the Department of Karmik and Adhyatmik Affairs (DoKAA), Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The event aims to bring together eminent scholars, researchers, monks, and academicians from across India and abroad to deliberate on the Sixth Dalai Lama’s spiritual contributions, poetic expressions, and philosophical insights.

According to officials, the conference will feature academic sessions, cultural exhibitions, and panel discussions focusing on the life and works of Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso, his influence on Buddhist thought, and his enduring connection to the spiritual and cultural identity of Tawang.

“This will be a historic moment for Tawang,” Khandu emphasized.

“Here, faith, culture, and scholarship will unite to celebrate one of the most profound spiritual figures born on our sacred land.”

The event is also expected to promote Tawang’s global recognition as a centre of Buddhist heritage and foster deeper academic collaboration between India and other Buddhist nations.

As Tawang prepares to welcome participants from across the world, the forthcoming International Conference promises to be a historic milestone — celebrating not just the life of a remarkable spiritual poet but also the enduring bond between culture, faith, and scholarship in Arunachal Pradesh.
