DC launches ‘Design &Tech Dev Workshop’ for artisans in E/Siang

PASIGHAT, Nov 4: East Siang Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani inaugurated a Design & Technology Development Workshop (DDW) on Cane and Bamboo Crafts for artisans of East Siang district under the comprehensive handicraft cluster development initiative (CHCD Scheme) at the ADTH office here today.

The workshop, organized by the department of Industries under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles (GoI), aims to upgrade skills of artisans, promote innovative designers and align handicraft products with national & international demands.

Speaking at the inaugural session, the DC urged the trainee artisans to take up self-employment ventures in the handicraft sector for their economic empowerment as she opined that there is immense potential for our handicraft products.

Stressing on local products with global quality, the DC also advised for identifying market demands and market gap. Informing on the upcoming Entrepreneurs Summit/Meet scheduled to be held in Pasighat in January tentatively, the DC urged budding entrepreneurs and also artisans keen to start their business ventures to participate in the meet. She also urged the artisans to take optimum benefit from the workshop under able expertise.

Earlier, Assistant Director Industries (ADI) Anima Gammeng briefed on the objectives of the skill development training under CHCD in which (two-month long training at DIC, Pasighat) 20 artisans of East Siang will be imparted training by empanelled designer Shanat K Pegu and master craftsperson, Pokrim Mitkong. She also urged for availing optimum benefit from the training programme with dedication and punctuality.

ADTH Libang Perme said that the initiative will help preserve and promote the dying art of traditional craftsmanship. AD (Sericulture) S Talom stressed the scope for income generating activities through handicrafts. EO Industries Upendra Prasad also spoke. (DIPRO)
