Itanagar, Dec 14: In a landmark moment for Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural and creative sector, the state’s rich handloom and handicraft traditions are being showcased for the first time ever on an international design platform at the prestigious Chiang Mai Design Week 2025 in Thailand.
The Arunachal Pradesh participation has been facilitated by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), with support from the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Representing Arunachal Pradesh are accomplished artisans whose works reflect deep-rooted traditions translated into contemporary expressions. National award-winning artisan John Paleng is presenting intricately crafted handmade bead jewellery, noted for its fine detailing, symbolic motifs and strong tribal identity.
Amma Bagbi is showcasing vibrant handmade crochet creations inspired by natural forms and traditional aesthetics, while Taba Yall Nabam is exhibiting handcrafted textiles that highlight the state’s refined weaving traditions.
During interactions with Thai artisans, designers and cultural practitioners, notable similarities were observed between the craft traditions of Arunachal Pradesh and the indigenous Lanna crafts of Northern Thailand.
The shared use of natural materials, symbolic motifs, handwoven textiles, beadwork traditions and community-based artisanal practices resonated strongly with Thai audiences, fostering an organic cultural dialogue rooted in shared heritage.
The debut participation has drawn significant interest from international visitors, designers and buyers, opening new avenues for cultural exchange, design collaboration and market engagement. Arunachal Pradesh’s presence at Chiang Mai Design Week 2025 marks a historic milestone and underscores the growing global recognition of Northeast India as a region of rich craftsmanship, living traditions and contemporary creative relevance, officials said.
