NAMSAI, Sep 30: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Regional Office Kolkata, organised a Consumer Outreach Programme (COP) at Arunachal University of Studies (AUS), Namsai, on Tuesday to create awareness among consumers about telecom services, regulatory provisions and consumer protection mechanisms.
The programme was attended by representatives of telecom service providers, members of the public and university officials. AUS Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Ajeya Jha was the chief guest, while Rector Prof (Dr) D S Hernwal was the guest of honour.
Joint Adviser, TRAI Regional Office Kolkata, Ashim Dutta, outlined the legislative framework governing telecom services in India, the role of TRAI and the objectives of the programme. The theme, ‘Billing and Tariff in Telecom and Broadcasting’, was also discussed.
The participants were briefed on consumer-centric regulations and mechanisms relating to unsolicited commercial communications, complaint redressal and quality of service. Officials also explained the TRAI MySpeed, TRAI DND 3.0 and TRAI MyCall apps, tariff portal, network quality drive tests and network coverage maps available for consumer use.
A session on financial cyber fraud was conducted by RBI Manager Ekansh Garg, who highlighted preventive measures and the precautions consumers should take to protect themselves from online fraud. DSP, Namsai Police, Matin, also shared his experience in dealing with cybercrime cases and stressed the importance of public awareness.
Vice-Chancellor Jha highlighted the role of TRAI as the regulator of the telecom and broadcasting sectors and encouraged participants to make use of such awareness programmes.
The presentations were followed by an interactive session during which the TRAI team and representatives of telecom service providers responded to queries from participants on various aspects of telecom services. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by TRAI Senior Research Officer Ayan Paul.
