ITANAGAR, Jun 30: The police on Tuesday arrested a man in connection with the journalist assault case following registration of an FIR at Nirjuli PS under sections 341/325/506 of Indian Penal Code.
As per the police complaint, Hofe Dada, a reporter with the digital media outlet ‘Gyoloo News’, who went to SMS Smelters Ltd at Lekhi village on Monday to do a report on it, was accosted by four men and one of them slapped him without any provocation. Besides, they threatened him not to report or else he would meet the same fate as senior journalist Tongam Rina, who was shot at her office in Itanagar in 2012.
“During investigation the unknown accused person Nangram Tapu, aged 34, working as security cum vigilance officer of M/s SMS Smelters Ltd has been arrested,” stated Arunachal Pradesh Police’s PRO Dr Navdeep Singh Brar.
“Further investigation is on,” he said without divulging further details.
Capital SP Tumme Amo while interacting with media persons at his office chamber here said that within 16 hours of the incident accused Nangram Tapu has been arrested this morning around 11.30 am from Naharlagun. Police is interrogating him and yet to establish the reason of assaulting the journalist, he added.
Sending out the strong message to those trying to take law in their hands, the SP said Capital Police will never tolerate such things.
Tapu is claiming himself as security in-charge of SMS factory but we are yet to verify the same, said Minli Geyi, OC, Nirjuli police station.
The SP, meanwhile, informed that during the lockdown and last six months, except for domestic violence, the crime rate in Capital Complex has reduced by around 20 per cent as compared to last year.
