KHONSA/ITANAGAR, Nov 21: Security forces have busted an extortion racket at Deomali in Tirap district and arrested an overground worker of a Naga rebel group on the charges of extorting money from the locals.
Police said, based on complaints on extortion calls received by the businessmen, shopkeepers and some public leaders of Deomali area by suspected cadre of NSCN(U), Deomali Police along with the Army based at Deomali swung into action and raided all the suspected locations. During the course of investigation, it was revealed that as per the direction of the extortionist, some amounts were already paid to the ‘caller’ through bank transactions.
Acting on a specific input, besides the above team, a special team led by Deomali SDPO Topha Wangsu and DySP (HQ) of Longding, Banghang Tangjang raided the house of the suspect at Chattong village under Kanubari circle and arrested the accused Pongsa Wanpan, an overground worker (OGW) of NSCN(U), in the wee hours today. Extortion money of Rs 58,200, one mobile phone, cheque book and some ID cards were recovered from his possession.
The OGW along with his brother, ‘self-styled private’ Honkai Wangpan, an active cadre of NSCN(U), was running the extortion racket at Deomali sub-division of Tirap district since many days. With the arrest of the OGW, a major extortion racket in the area has been busted, police said.
The joint operation was supervised and coordinated by SP Tirap under the overall supervision of DIG (TCL).
A case under Sections 120(B)/384/507 IPC R/W Section 10/13 UA(P) Act has been registered at Deomali PS and further investigations taken, police added.
