Over 500 from ‘12 States’ to vie for honour in Asmita-Khelo India Taekwondo League from Oct 3-6

ITANAGAR, Oct 1: The Arunachal Taekwondo Association (ATA) is going to organize Phase-3 of the 2nd Asmita-Khelo India Women's Taekwondo League from October 3 to 6 next at the Khelo India stadium, Itanagar.

The event is being organized by ATA under the aegis of Taekwondo Federation of India and sponsored by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), New Delhi.

Around 500 participants including officials from 12 States comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Nagaland, besides two teams from paramilitary forces, one team from the SAI, a team each from SSB, Assam Rifles and (NCOE) SAI, Guwahati will be seen in action during the four-day Asmita-Khelo India Taekwondo League.

This was informed by organizing chairman Yabi Pudu at the Arunachal Press club here today.

From the State, 38 female athletes including the National Games medallist are participating in all three categories of the four-day event.

The Department of Sports (GoAP) is “fully” cooperating, supporting and motivating us to host the zonal event, said ATA general secretary Likha Robin.

Taekwondo is a core event at the Summer Olympics. However, it was initially seen at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and Barcelona Olympics in 1992 as a demonstration sport. Ultimately, the sport was included as a core event at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

We, at the ATA, are focusing on taekwondo so that we can send our players to the  Olympic Games in the coming years, said ATA vice president L Sokun Singh.
