Itanagar, Feb 11: A tragic road traffic accident on NH-415 near Soge Resort, Hollongi, around 15 km from here, claimed the lives of two individuals on Monday evening, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.
The accident involved an 18-wheeler trailer truck (MH-46H-2482) owned by M/S Ganpati Drilling, camp office - Hollongi Airport Road, which was transporting heavy drilling equipment.
The incident occurred around 7 pm when the truck lost control while navigating a sharp turn and collided with a roadside hilly mountain while en route to Hollongi. The impact caused the heavy cargo to lurch forward, crushing the truck cabin and tragically trapping the occupants inside, leaving them with no chance of survival, Itanagar SP Rohit Rajbir Singh said.
The deceased have been identified as Ripam Boruah (30), the driver, from Sibsagar, Assam, and Mehedi Hasan (24), the helper, from Murshidabad, West Bengal. Both victims were trapped inside the wreckage and died on the spot, he said.
The Chimpu Police, along with company staff, immediately rushed to the scene to extricate the bodies. The remains were moved to RK Mission Hospital last night, and an inquest was conducted today in the presence of company officials. The bodies have since been sent to TRIHMS, Naharlagun for post-mortem examination, the SP said, adding that a case has been registered as Chimpu PS Case No. 06/2025 under Sections 281/106(1) of the BNS, and the investigation is being led by Sub-Inspector N S Liyang.
Meanwhile, the authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on sharp turns, to avoid such devastating incidents.
