Itanagar, Jul 5: In a powerful demonstration of environmental commitment and civil-military cooperation, the Likabali Military Station commemorated the 76th Van Mahotsav Week with a large-scale tree plantation drive. The initiative was jointly conducted in collaboration with the Likabali Forest Division and the Lower Siang District Administration.
Organized under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, the event saw the plantation of over 7,000 saplings within the MES Likabali campus. As part of the broader week-long campaign, an additional 5,000 saplings are scheduled to be planted, alongside the free distribution of 25,000 saplings to the public—aiming to galvanize collective action toward environmental rejuvenation.
The plantation drive was led by 56 Infantry Division’s Deputy General Officer Commanding (DGOC) Brig Sunil Upadhyay, accompanied by Lt Col AK Singh, department heads, and enthusiastic participation from Army personnel across all ranks. A variety of native and climate-resilient species were planted to promote biodiversity, strengthen local green cover, and reinforce the region’s ecological resilience.
Speaking on the occasion, Brig Sunil Upadhyay stated, “The Indian Army is committed to safeguarding both the nation and nature. This initiative reflects our dedication to future generations.”
Gracing the event, Lower Siang Deputy Commissioner Rujjum Rakshap commended the collaborative initiative. Emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared duty, the DC noted, “When the Army, Forest Department, and Civil Administration come together like this, we not only plant trees—we plant the seeds of a greener future.”
Divisional Forest Officer Bajum Taba also lauded the Indian Army’s enthusiastic participation, calling it “an example of civil-military partnership for sustainability”.
The drive not only symbolizes environmental stewardship but also aligns with India’s broader mission to combat climate change, promote afforestation, and foster ecological awareness among citizens.
The Van Mahotsav celebrations in Lower Siang will conclude on July 7 at Government Higher Secondary School, Gensi, with further outreach programs aimed at engaging students and the wider community in ongoing green initiatives.
