Itanagar, Nov 15: Arunachal Pradesh marked Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas — commemorating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Veer Birsa Munda — with vibrant celebrations across the State, highlighted by major programmes in Acheso village of Dibang Valley and Government Town Secondary School, Tawang.
In Acheso, the first Indian village along the international border in Northeast India, the Dibang Valley district administration, in collaboration with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, organised a culturally rich programme reflecting tribal pride and community spirit.
The event began with flag hoisting and the National Anthem presented by students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Anini, followed by a floral tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Welcoming the gathering, SDO Lijum Ete highlighted the importance of honouring tribal heroes who shaped India’s cultural and freedom legacy.
Dibang Valley SP Manish Shaurya detailed the life and contributions of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, reverently known as “Dharti Abba”. He recounted Birsa Munda’s leadership of the historic Ulgulan movement, his struggle against colonial exploitation, and his relentless advocacy for indigenous land rights and cultural identity. He said that despite attaining martyrdom at 25, Birsa Munda’s ideals continue to inspire tribal communities nationwide.
Theko Tayu, ZPC, Dibang Valley, called upon the community to uphold Birsa Munda’s values of unity, courage, and cultural preservation. The event concluded with colourful cultural performances by students, adding vibrancy to the celebrations.
Meanwhile, in Tawang, a lively cultural programme was organised at Government Town Secondary School under the Vibrant Village Programme, also coinciding with the nationwide Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrations. The event was graced by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta, along with Dondup, District Coordinator representing DDSE Tawang.
Five cultural troupes showcased the region’s traditional arts, including the Snow Lion Dance by the Welfare Association of Shyo village, performances by artists of the Monpa Institute of Performing Arts, and cultural items by students of Kremethang School and Town Secondary School.
The programme was sponsored by NEZCC, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
Prizes were distributed to participating artists, followed by a signature campaign promoting cultural pride and community involvement. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks acknowledging all contributors.
Celebrations across Acheso and Tawang stood as a testament to Arunachal Pradesh’s rich tribal heritage and deep-rooted reverence for Bhagwan Birsa Munda, reaffirming the collective resolve to preserve indigenous identity, unity, and cultural vibrancy.
