Itanagar, Jun 8: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Tai Tagak filed his nomination papers for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Arunachal Pradesh at the State Legislative Assembly in Itanagar on Monday.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Arunachal Pradesh BJP president Kaling Moyong, BJP state in-charge and Assam minister Ashok Singhal, senior party leaders and supporters accompanied Tagak during the filing of his nomination.
Wishing the BJP veteran “every success in the journey ahead and a fruitful tenure in service of the State and the nation”, Khandu said Tagak’s vast experience, deep understanding of the state and commitment to public service would make him a strong voice for Arunachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.
Deputy CM Mein, who served as a proposer, said effective representation at the national level becomes ever more important as Arunachal Pradesh continues its developmental journey, and wished Tagak success in the election.
Meanwhile, an official communiqué from the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat said, two sets of nomination papers were filed by Tagak, the sole BJP-sponsored candidate for the lone seat.
Scrutiny of nominations will be held on June 9 (Tuesday) at the Nokmey Namati Hall of Legislative Assembly, while June 11 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
With the BJP enjoying a comfortable majority in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tagak’s election to the Upper House of Parliament is expected to be a formality.
In the 60-member Assembly, the ruling BJP has 46 MLAs, while the state’s regional outfit People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has six members, followed by three from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), one each from the Congress and National People’s Party (NPP), and three Independents.
