Kojum Taba creates new national record at Weightlifting Nationals


ITANAGAR, Mar 29: Continuing its good run in the ongoing IWLF Youth, Junior and Senior Weightlifting Championship 2021-22 held at Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium, KIIT deemed university, Bhubaneswar, Odisha from March 19 to 31, Arunachal’s another ‘heavy weight’ Kojum Taba has created a new national record in senior event today.
Kojum, a former Commonwealth champion, participating in 102 Kg weight category, secured gold medal by lifting Snatch: 153 Kg and Clean & Jerk: 192 Kg with a total of 345 Kg, according to a press note from the Arunachal Weightlifting Association.
Kojum didn’t take part in last year’s championship due to injury.
Vikas Thakur of Services Sports Control Board (SCCB) won silver by lifting 148 Kg in snatch and 193 Kg in clean & jerk, totalling 341 Kg. The bronze medal went to Sachin Mehmi, also of SCCB. He lifted 148 Kg (snatch) and 185 Kg (clean & jerk), with a total of 333Kg.
Earlier on Monday, Arunachal’s ‘heavy weight’ Sambo Lapung became champion in the senior event.
Lapung, former South Asia Federation (SAF) Games Gold medallist, taking part in 96 Kg weight category, grabbed gold by lifting 147 Kg in snatch and 189 Kg in clean & jerk, with a total of 336 Kg.
