Itanagar, May 9: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik participated in the Waqf Reform Awareness Meet at Raj Bhavan here on Friday. The event brought together religious leaders, scholars, and civil society representatives to deliberate on the significance of the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill 2025.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasized that the landmark legislation was the outcome of extensive consultations, and collective effort, guided by the inclusive spirit of ‘Sabka Prayas’, that reflected a true sense of national participation and teamwork.
The Governor described the Bill as a progressive step aimed at ensuring that the revenues and benefits from Waqf properties are directed toward the upliftment of those in need, helping them to stand at par with other communities. He added that the reform is not just about administration, but about empowerment and equity.
He appealed to the members of the Muslim community to shed the mindset of minority status. Citing the inspiring examples of prominent Muslim figures who have made invaluable contributions to India, including the late President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, he said that the community has been contributing richly to the growth of the country.
While acknowledging the participation of members of all faiths in the meet, Governor Parnaik highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s tradition of religious harmony and mutual respect. He appealed to the people to continue fostering goodwill and positive thought for the progress of the society, the state and the nation.
State’s Indigenous Affairs and Home Minister Mama Natung also addressed the gathering, calling the Bill a much-needed corrective and inclusive step, aligned with the principles of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas’. He encouraged all citizens to understand the positive impact of the legislation and work together to strengthen communal harmony.
Prof Nani Bath and Prof Nabum Naka Hina from the Department of Political Science, Rajiv Gandhi University, along with Dr MQ Khan, Principal of Dera Natung Govt College, provided in-depth insights into the historical background of Waqf, the key changed brought by the Bill, and the long-term benefits for the community.
Dharm Gurus and representatives from various faiths, including Indigenous, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian communities as well as members of civil society and special invitees attended the meet, reflecting the spirit of unity, dialogue, and inclusiveness that the reform aims to promote.
