PASIGHAT, May 9: In a determined response to the growing threat of soil erosion by the Siang River, the villagers of Borguli, especially WRC field owners, are continuing voluntary flood control works under the Mebo sub-division of East Siang district. These community-led efforts, ongoing for the past two months, aim to protect wet rice cultivation fields ahead of the monsoon.

The initiative has gained momentum following the recent formation of the Siang Flood Warriors (SFW), spearheaded by social worker Gekong Pertin. With delayed government funding, villagers have stepped in with self-contributions.

WRD Pasighat Division Executive Engineer Onit Panyang, along with officials including AE Alat Megu, visited the work site and lauded the villagers’ efforts. EE Panyang also extended personal financial support of Rs 50,000 to aid the cause.

Despite the lack of sanctioned government funds this season, the villagers—backed by local leaders and volunteers—remain committed to protecting their lands through grit, unity, and resourcefulness.
