PASIGHAT, Jul 9: Eminent herbalist from East Siang district, Yanung Jamoh Lego has been honoured by Spear Corps of the Indian Army, in recognition of her outstanding contributions and “untiring mission” in the field of indigenous knowledge system.
Lego was felicitated by the Commander Spear Corps with a memento during a felicitation programme held at the Sigar military station here today, honouring her achievements after a brief introduction highlighting her background and commitment to preserving the traditional healing system.
Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri Lego extended her gratitude for the honour bestowed by the Spear Corps, emphasizing that Nature holds the cure for most ailments. She said: “The medicinal and healing properties of plants and herbs are a gift from Mother Nature to humankind.”She added that the age-old traditional healing system is also an important component in the wellness and healthcare system.
The distinguished herbal healer enlightened the gathering on her lifelong calling to heal needy patients through herbal medicine. Stating that her patient base has increased from several corners of the country, she said that researchers and PHD scholars also avail her herbal expertise for their academic research works.
Born on 9th July, 1963 with academic background of MSc in Agriculture from Assam Agricultural University, Lego has served as District Agricultural Officer, and retired from government service in 2023. Hailing from Sika-ode village in East Siang district, she has credited her foray into the world of traditional herbal system to her father, a much regarded traditional healer in the community, for introducing and guiding her to the world of traditional healing system from childhood.
Since 1995 she has treated thousands of patients using herbal remedies and also founded ‘Indigenous Herbal heritage’ to promote medicinal plant conservation and awareness. It is said that her initiative has educated lakhs and led to plantation of thousands of herbal species annually. She continues her lifelong dedication to preserving India’s ancient healing traditions and promoting holistic sustainable healthcare. (DIPRO)
