World Tourism Day celebrated in Tawang, Bomdila with focus on sustainable tourism

TAWANG, Sep 27: The Department of Tourism, Tawang, joined the global observance of World Tourism Day with a vibrant celebration, emphasizing sustainable tourism for the region. The event brought together officials, stakeholders, and visitors to highlight the importance of preserving Tawang’s environment, culture, and traditions while promoting responsible tourism.

Gracing the event, Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo stressed that tourism development should focus not merely on increasing tourist numbers or facilities but on ensuring quality services, visitor satisfaction, and preservation of the region’s pristine heritage. She urged the promotion of rural unexplored destinations such as Jemeithang and Mago, advocating for eco-friendly, community-driven initiatives that benefit even the remotest villages.

District Tourism Officer Tsering Dekey highlighted ongoing efforts by the administration to promote sustainable tourism, including a refresher-cum-capacity building training for hoteliers, homestay operators, and tourist guides.

Certificates were awarded to participants of the Homestay Owners’ Convention and recent capacity-building trainees, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to skill development and service enhancement.

In a move towards environmental responsibility, the DC oversaw the distribution of dustbins sponsored by the Mon Hotel Association. The celebrations also featured the launch of the book "Threads of Destiny: The Saga of Mandralgang and Pemachen" by Koncho Teering, celebrating local literature and storytelling.

The cultural richness of Tawang was showcased through vibrant Monpa dance performances by the Ketchenga Cultural Troupe and WASV Cultural Troupe. An exhibition of local cuisines, prepared and presented by the Homestay Owners’ Association, offered attendees a taste of authentic regional flavors.

The event was attended by Sange Norbu, Assistant Commissioner Tawang; Kesang Norbu, OC SB from District Police; Rinchin Norbu, secretary general, Mon Mimang Tsokpa (MMT); Tashi Dondup, president of Taxi Union; Sonam, president Hoteliers’ Association; Lham Ngurup, president Homestay Operators; tour guides; and domestic and international tourists.

Reflecting on the occasion, the DC reiterated, “World Tourism Day is not just a celebration but a reminder of our responsibility to develop tourism sustainably for future generations.” The program highlighted the shared commitment of the Administration, Department of Tourism, and local stakeholders to position Tawang as a destination that balances growth with sustainability.

Bomdila: World Tourism Day was also observed at the Kameng Club, Bomdila, with a program that emphasized the district’s immense tourism potential and the importance of sustainable development in the sector.

Inaugurating the event, Kalaktang MLA Tseten Chombay highlighted that West Kameng, blessed with natural beauty, cultural richness, and heritage, is one of the most preferred destinations for tourists. He urged local communities to work collectively in spreading awareness and a sense of responsibility towards cleanliness, heritage preservation, and cultural pride.

Citing Shergaon as a model of successful tourism practices, he called upon all stakeholders to frame inclusive policies for the holistic development of the district’s tourism sector. He also stressed on preserving natural heritage, flora and fauna, and traditional structures.

West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Akriti Sagar underlined the district’s strong prospects for growth in tourism and appealed for cooperation from stakeholders, including homestay owners, tour operators, and hoteliers. She also emphasized the importance of responsible tourism practices, plastic waste management, and cleanliness awareness to ensure long-term sustainability.

The celebration was attended by heads of departments, SHGs, NGOs, officials, hotel owners, tour operators, and members of the general public, reflecting the shared commitment towards promoting West Kameng as a responsible and sustainable tourism destination. (DIPROs)
