DAPORIJO, Sep 27: The community of Daporijo, the administrative headquarters of Upper Subansiri district, is observing a period of solemn mourning following the demise of Nete Yamak Kena, a celebrated matriarch and one of the region's earliest female business leaders.
Nete Yamak Kena, wife of late Tarik Kena, passed away at Aditya Hospital in Assam’s Dibrugarh earlier this week after prolonged illness.
Nete was the respected bedrock of a large and established family in Daporijo. She is survived by one daughter and three sons, who, alongside her numerous grandchildren, are committed to upholding her enduring legacy of strength, integrity, and community dedication.
She will be historically recognized for her profound influence on socio-economic development of Upper Subansiri district. Her tenure as a pioneering entrepreneur began in the 1970’s, a period when civil infrastructure and commercial activity in the newly established district headquarters were minimal. By establishing her own business—a significant retail outlet—she demonstrated foresight and resolve, immediately challenging the prevailing barriers for women in commerce. Her enterprise did not merely serve a personal goal; it actively contributed to building the nascent commercial ecosystem of Daporijo, setting a powerful and enduring precedent.
Officials and community elders regard her shop as a foundational cornerstone that inspired a generational shift, encouraging other local women to pursue self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
Following Kena’s passing, condolences are pouring in from across the State. Gumjum Haider, former State Information Commissioner, was among the first to express his grief, highlighting the depth of loss felt by those who knew her.
“With hearts filled with grief and emotion, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing away of dearest Nete Yamak Kena, wife of Late Tarik Kena, after prolonged illness,” Haider said in his message. He further emphasized her invaluable contribution, adding, “She left us for her heavenly abode, leaving behind a void that can never be filled.”
The entire Daporijo community remains in solidarity with the bereaved family during this period of immense sorrow, celebrating the life of a true pioneer whose industrious spirit helped shape the modern town. (Courtesy Bilaseng Namchoom)
