Arunachal set to launch first commercial coal mine at Namchik-Namphuk block

Itanagar, Oct 5: Arunachal Pradesh is poised to make history on Monday with the launch of its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block, marking a transformative milestone in the state’s journey toward energy security, economic growth, and employment generation.

The inauguration will be led by Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, who alongside Chief Minister Pema Khandu will perform the Bhoomi Poojan, hand over the mining lease, flag off tools and machinery of CPPL to the Namchik-Namphuk Central Coal Block, official sources said.

“With this landmark initiative, the Union Minister will be fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by integrating the North East into the national energy and infrastructure grid. The mine is expected to generate Rs 4,500 crore in revenue for the Arunachal Pradesh government under Pema Khandu’s dynamic leadership,” officials said.

Speaking ahead of the launch event, G Kishan Reddy noted, “This is not just a mining project. It is a symbol of trust, transparency, and transformation for the people of Arunachal Pradesh. We are bringing sustainable, scientific, and legal mining practices to a region that holds immense potential.”

CM Khandu, expressing gratitude for the Centre’s continued support, added: “This initiative will not only boost revenue but also bring in skill development, infrastructure, and long-term employment for our youth. We are proud to be part of India’s growth journey.”

Naveen Singhal, Chairman of Mahalaxmi Group and one of the promoters of Namchik-Namphuk Coal Mine, expressed that the Namchik-Namphuk project will set a national benchmark in combining economic development with environmental responsibility, and stands as a first-of-its-kind model in the history of coal mining in the North East.

With estimated reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, the Namchik-Namphuk coal block was initially allocated in 2003 but remained stalled for years. Revived through a transparent auction process in 2022, the project marks the re-entry of the private sector into coal mining in the state.

The launch of the Namchik-Namphuk coal mine will symbolize the integration of development, ecology, and Jan Bhagidaari, contributing to India’s energy security, community welfare, and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi.
