RGU’s Dept of Education holds community awareness program at OWA, Nlg

ITANAGAR, Oct 12: Continuing its annual tradition of engaging with the community, the Department of Education, Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), organized a Community Awareness Programme themed ‘My Planet, My Responsibility’ at Oju Welfare Association, Naharlagun.

The event was led by the MA Education (third semester) students as part of their community engagement initiative aimed at spreading awareness about environmental issues.

The students spent an entire day with the children and members of the OWA, conducting a series of educational and creative activities centered on environmental conservation. A drawing competition themed ‘Environment’ was held for the students of OWA-run school to encourage creative expression and awareness about environmental protection. To add colour and enthusiasm to the event, a cultural programme with songs, skits, and performances conveying messages of sustainability was also presented.

In a gesture of compassion and community support, the MA students also donated a day’s ration to the children’s home. The event was guided and motivated by the head of the department, Dr Boa Reena Tok, who appreciated the students’ effort and urged them to continue taking proactive measures to protect and preserve the environment. She highlighted the role of youth in promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

The Programme Coordinator, Dr Tage Monju Burman stated that the Dept of Education has been conducting similar community-based initiatives for the past five to six years. Under this initiative, the department has been actively involved in tree plantation drives across government schools in Doimukh and Nirjuli, cleanliness campaigns in market areas and hospitals, distribution of dustbins, and quiz competitions in various schools of the Capital Complex.

Dr Monju emphasized that “Real education extends beyond textbooks and classroom walls. It is through such community-oriented programmes that students learn social responsibility, empathy, and environmental consciousness.”

She further added that in view of the growing environmental challenges, it is essential for academic institutions to take the lead in spreading awareness and fostering community participation.
