2 killed in elephant attack in Namsang village

Itanagar, Oct 21: In a tragic incident, two residents of Namsang village in Tirap district were killed by a herd of wild elephants on Monday night.

The victims have been identified as Tanen Nocte (46) and Nanthok Hodong (45), who were attacked near the village school campus between 10 pm and 11 pm, sources said.

This marks the fourth human fatality due to elephant attacks in the Deomali area this year and the fifth within the past 12 months, highlighting the growing concern over human-elephant conflict in the region. Among the victims over the past year was former MLA Kapchen Rajkumar.

Upon receiving the information, a team comprising the Range Forest Officer (RFO), medical personnel, and police officials rushed to the spot to assess the situation and complete necessary formalities.

Environment and Forests Minister Wangki Lowang visited the site on Tuesday to take stock of the situation, accompanied by ADC B Tawsik.

The district administration has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that necessary relief assistance will be extended to the bereaved families.

Authorities have also emphasized the need for preventive and mitigation measures to minimize future incidents of human-elephant conflict in the area.
