TAWANG, Oct 23: ‘Shahid Diwas’ was observed today at Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border to honour Subedar Joginder Singh and other soldiers who were martyred during the 1962 Indo-China War in the Bumla sector.

The Indian Army’s Sikh Regiment, in coordination with the Tawang Administration, organized a bike rally from the Tawang War Memorial to Bumla Pass to mark the occasion.

Local MLA Namgey Tsering, who joined the rally, paid tribute to Subedar Joginder Singh and his team, recalling their extraordinary courage. “We are living peacefully because of their sacrifice,” he said. Despite facing an enemy force far larger than their own, Subedar Singh and his men held their ground.

Speaking about the historic battle, the MLA said, “After two enemy attack waves, the platoon was reduced to half its strength. Though wounded in the thigh, Subedar Singh refused to retreat. When a third wave attacked, he charged with his remaining men, fighting with bayonets until he was captured.”

Subedar Joginder Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, for his bravery and sacrifice.
