Capital DDMA hosted three-day training for community volunteers commences

ITANAGAR, Nov 19: As part of a three-day training programme organized by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Capital Itanagar, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Toko Babu that commenced today, a total of 50 youths got registered as community volunteers.

The three-day workshop has been designed to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge related to disaster mitigation, emergency response, first aid, evacuation techniques, and coordination during natural and human-made disasters. Experts from 12 National Disaster Response Force, Hollongi and DDMA Master Trainers will conduct hands-on training, demonstrations, and interactive sessions throughout the programme.

Today’s training sessions featured presentations on the basics of disaster management and disaster risk management (DRM) by the NDRF, along with instructional sessions on earthquake safety, flood preparedness, and protection from thunderstorms and lightning by Nibia Kapa, DM Instructor.

Additional sessions on landslide and heatwave safety were led by Subhash Sonar, DM Instructor. Fire safety was covered by the Fire & Emergency Services Itanagar, while basic search and rescue techniques and water rescue methods were demonstrated by 12th NDRF.

Students, faculty members, and Community volunteers participated enthusiastically, reflecting a strong commitment towards building a disaster-resilient society in the Itanagar Capital Region.

DDMO Moromi Dodum, in her address, underlined the essential role of volunteers as first responders during emergencies. She emphasized the crucial role of community volunteers in disaster preparedness, early warning dissemination, and strengthening local-level resilience. She also highlighted that active community engagement is the backbone of an effective disaster response system.

Vijay Triparthi, Registrar Himalayan University, underscored the importance of disaster awareness and capacity-building programmes within academic institutions. Appreciating the collaborative initiative, he encouraged students and participants to take full advantage of the training sessions, which are vital for mitigating disaster risks in the region.

The workshop will continue over the next two days with intensive sessions aimed at empowering participants with essential disaster management competencies.

As part of the initiative, the DDMA also distributed emergency kits, including solar lamps, umbrellas, and first-aid boxes, to the volunteers. (DIPRO)
