Lakhimpur meets to ‘turn on’ Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre, launch a book on long-lasting Assam-Arunachal bond

ITANAGAR, Dec 15: Aiming at giving a “push” to Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre under Asom Sahitya Sabha in Lakhimpur district, a meeting involving literary activists of Arunachal Pradesh and Asom Sahitya Sabha dignitaries from Biswanath, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts was held at Bihpuriya Sakha Sahitya Sabha Bhawan under the aegis of Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre Sub-Committee, Asom Sahitya Sabha in collaboration with Bihpuriya Sakha Sahitya Sabha on Sunday last.

The meeting, which began with the presentation of Asom Sahitya Sabha theme song “Chira Senehi Mor Bhasa Jononi...” by the artistes of Bihpuriya Sakha Sahitya Sabha, was chaired by Apurba Phukan, president of Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre Sub-Committee under the management of Bihpuriya Sakha Sahitya Sabha secretary Benudhar Das, took up a number of resolutions on the Research and Study Centre.

Shedding light on the objective of the programme, Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre Sub-Committee secretary Bharat Rajkhowa highlighted the action plan of the Research and Study Centre. He said that the Centre would organize a series of lecture events on Lummer Dai and Arunachal Pradesh by experts in colleges. This will encourage students to study and do research on these subjects. The first event in the series will be held at Dhemaji College.

Afterwards, the programme will be implemented in three colleges of Assam and one college of Arunachal Pradesh by June 1 next year. On June 1, 2026, a book reflecting the long-lasting relations between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be launched. Moreover, Lummer Dai Smriti Divas will be celebrated on June 1, 2026 at Bihpuriya.

During the meeting, a 5-member supervisory committee was formed with Prafulla Bhagawati, Chandika Dutta Konwar, Dipali Bora Saikia, Rajen Sabhapandit and Jadav Kataki, while Satyajit Borah was selected as editor of the book to be published on perennial relationship between Assam-Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, former general secretary and adviser of Arunachal Literary Society (APLS), Tokong Pertin expressed immense pleasure for the initiative taken to activate the Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre. He suggested that the Research and Study Centre should launch an online Assamese teaching-learning course so that people of Arunachal Pradesh could learn Assamese.

He also appealed to the Asom Sahitya Sabha to undertake a project to translate the literary creation of Lummer Dai and Y D Thongchi into English so that the people of Arunachal Pradesh could learn what the two literary figures did in the Assamese language.

On behalf of Arunachal Pradesh, the APLS extended its best wishes to the Lummer Dai Research and Study Centre expecting its relentless functioning in future.

APLS member Rindo Pertin, in his speech, said that literature should be a bridge between the two states as there is a language gap. He added that literature should strengthen the bond of love, brotherhood, solidarity and communal harmony.

Sanjib Borah, secretary of Asom Sahitya Sabha and in-charge of Lakhimpur Regional Centre attended the meeting as observer.

Prominent literary organizer Golok Hazarika, Bihpuriya Sakha Sahitya Sabha president Anil Kakati, Dakshin Bihpuriya Kalyankami Sakha Sahitya Sabha dignitary Manoranjan Sarmah, Madhavdev Sakha Sahitya Sabha dignitary Aroti Neog, Simaluguri Sakha Sahitya Sabha secretary Dipak Islary, Lakhimpur Jila Sahitya Sabha former secretary Nabakamal Bora, Biswanath Jila Sahitya Sabha president Mahendra Gogoi also spoke.
