Drug peddling bust in Nirjuli: 2 kg cannabis seized; 1 arrested

Itanagar, Dec 17: In a significant crackdown on drug peddling, the Nirjuli Police on Tuesday seized 2 kg of suspected cannabis and arrested a woman during a raid conducted at P-Sector, Nirjuli, near the Poultry Farm.

According to police sources, the action followed reliable input received by Nirjuli Police Station regarding the sale and storage of ganja in the area. Acting promptly on the information, a police team led by Inspector Tadu Hassang, Officer-in-Charge of Nirjuli Police Station, along with ASI D C Namsa, constables Hano Pai, Bishal Newar, T Tanjang, Tamin Rai and lady constable L Wangmu, conducted a raid at around 7 pm.

During the search, the police recovered 2 kg of suspected ganja packed in pouches from the residence of Pronoda Nath (55), wife of late Gojen Sondo Nath. She is a native of village Madhukushi under Rongia Police Station in Kamrup district of Assam and is presently residing at P-Sector near the Poultry Farm in Nirjuli.

The accused was arrested on the spot, and a case has been registered at Nirjuli Police Station vide Case No. 98/2025 under Section 20(b)(ii)(B) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police said that the seized contraband has been taken into custody following due legal procedures. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the drugs and to identify any other persons involved in the racket.

Meanwhile, Naharlagun SP Dr Nyelam Nega appealed to the general public to cooperate with the police by sharing credible information related to drug peddling and substance abuse. He assured that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential and reiterated the police department’s commitment to taking stringent action against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
