Leparada DC stresses ‘comprehensive’ approach to combat drug menace

BASAR, Jan 29: The monthly NCORD meeting was held here today under the chairpersonship of Leparada Deputy Commissioner Himani Meena, along with NCORD Convenor-cum-Superintendent of Police Dr Thuptan Jambey to review the ongoing initiatives undertaken by various stakeholders to curb drug abuse and to strengthen awareness measures in the district.

During the meeting, District Medical Officer Dr Karmar Dirchi informed the house that the process for establishing of a De-addiction Centre at Basar is underway and that the centre will become operational soon following the recruitment of technical healthcare personnel to oversee its functioning.

Expressing satisfaction over the collective efforts of all stakeholders, the DC emphasized the need to create a ‘Support Group’ to serve as an informal support system for recovering addicts. She highlighted that such a platform would enable individuals to express their thoughts and concerns without fear of judgment or punitive action.

She further called for a coordinated and inclusive approach involving all sections of society to combat drug menace and to safeguard the younger generation, while also ensuring compassion and space for recovery for those affected.

Stressing the crucial role of parental support in the fight against drug abuse, the SP appealed to all stakeholders to share any intelligence related to drug peddling or suspicious activities for prompt police action. He reiterated that collective and sustained small initiatives would yield significant outcomes in the fight against drug abuse in the long run.

Moreover, it was stated that extensive awareness programmes on drug menace and associated health issues are being conducted in schools by the Police and Education Departments. Counsellors from the Medical Department and members from GRK (Gumin Rego Kilaju) led by its secretary general Tami Lombi are actively engaged as resource persons and also mobilizing these awareness programmes. Additionally, ArSRLM is also motivating Self Help Groups, particularly women members, to carry out awareness activities at the cluster and village levels. (DIPRO)
