Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar highlights power of conciliation, inclusive justice at APSLSA event

Itanagar, Feb 2: Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and Patron-in-Chief of the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA), Justice Ashutosh Kumar, on Monday emphasised that justice must be humane, inclusive and emotionally accessible, while releasing and screening the APSLSA theme song “Arunachal Tum Bharat ko Jagate Ho”.

Drawing a parallel between law and music, the Chief Justice said that while legal language can sometimes create divisions, music has the unique power to unite people across cultures and traditions. The theme song, he said, carries a strong message that justice is not confined to law books or courtrooms but is meant for every citizen.

“Justice is not only about physical proximity; it is also about emotional connect,” Justice Kumar said, adding that awareness and trust are essential for people to truly access justice.

Highlighting the broader role of the justice delivery system, he said the purpose of justice is not merely to decide disputes but to heal, restore trust and preserve human dignity. He underlined the transformative impact of conciliation, mediation and Lok Adalats in delivering people-centric justice, especially to marginalised sections.

Justice Kumar also elaborated on the objectives of Legal Services Authorities, including legal literacy, strengthening mediation centres, Lok Adalats and legal aid clinics, and encouraging collective efforts towards inclusive justice. Commending APSLSA for the innovative initiative, he said it reflected creativity, institutional confidence and commitment to social justice.

The theme song has been written by noted Assamese lyricist Kamal Kataki, composed and directed by Manas Hazarika, and sung by Deepanjali Gogoi and Lenzing Doming.

Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of APSLSA, said the song aims to reach people in the remotest parts of the state and stressed that its success would depend on wide dissemination.

Justices Kardak Ete and Budi Habung were also present, among others.
